Skylanders Spyro's Adventure is an Action-Adventure game spin-off from the Spyro series designed for younger players that unlocks a whole new game universe while incorporating a unique gameplay mechanic utilizing more than 30 physical action figures that synch with consoles, creating a controllable in-game representation of that figure. Action figures are compatible with all versions of the game. The game features co-op and competitive multiplayer, mini-games and more.

The Skylanders Story

For generations, the Skylanders -- a diverse group of mythical creatures, each with their own powers, personality and tendencies -- have used their magical powers, weapons and levelable battle skills to protect their homeland, the Skylands. But now, an evil tyrant with the powers of a portal master has frozen and banished them to Earth. Only you, a portal master yourself, can physically put Skylanders on the Portal of Power -- a conduit between this world and theirs -- and bring them back to life in their world where they can battle to save Skylands forever.

Action Figures with Brains

Skylanders are special physical action figures that come to life in-game. Just take a Skylander, place it on the included Portal of Power, which is synched to your game console and a representation of your chosen Skylander will come to life in the video game and do your bidding. There are over 30 Skylanders in total - each with unique abilities and powers (three are included in your starter pack). Skylander action figures remember their in-game experiences and upgrades as they explore the mysterious world of Skylands, battle menacing creatures and collect treasures. Conveniently, it doesn't matter what gaming system your friends have at their house, the Skylanders work on and across all major video game systems. That means that you can take your Skylanders over to your friend's house, drop them on their Portal of Power and your Skylanders will come to life in the game.

I saw this was on sale for Black Friday, $20 off the regular price so I decided to pick one up. Im actually glad I did.
I was a huge fan of the Spyro games on PS1 (Spyro, Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon) and also Enter the Dragonfly for PS2. I haven't played any other games since, though I do own Shadow Legacy(DS) and Eternal Night (GBA) (haven't played either of them, yet!). So I was VERY excited to hear about a new game that would be on Wii. Though not keen on the idea of having to buy characters in order to advance to some areas of the game.
I plugged it in last night and didn't wish to stop playing. I'm almost 24 years old and this game was fun for me, albeit easy. I can see myself finishing this very fast but I'm a 'completionist' so I will be going back once I buy more Skylanders to complete the levels to get all 3 stars. I do plan on buying a few of the additional characters, probably 1 from each 'element'. Though some are harder to find.
I'm the type who enjoys solving puzzles and hack n slashing enemies, as apposed to FPS (first person shooters).
Now I have this and Zelda Skyward Sword. Skylanders will be my 'on break' game when I get frustrated with Zelda =)

5Can get expensive but it's fun!, November 24, 2011
I saw this game and knew I would have to get it as my kid was already talking about Skylanders and Spyro.

The introduction kit has a big price tag. However, you get three characters, the portal, the game, a poster, cards of the three characters, a sticker sheet and some web codes.

The character figures are interesting. You use them to assign the character you want to play in the game. You simply put one on the portal and he appears in the game. This is a two player game as the portal can only hold two characters.

One thing that is nice is you can continue to play simply by trading out characters. There are times where the game will tell you a type of character is stronger in certain areas.

You can even trade figure when your character gets tired (they don't die). The characters getting tired is a nice feature because if the kids want to keep their position, they have to take a break and allow the characters to rest. Otherwise, they have to start a new game.

Be careful with pushing the controller buttons when leaving or entering a game. We did get a few messages about too many Skylanders on the portal until we figured out what we were doing wrong.

The portal of power is wireless which makes it useful for placement especially if you have a large dog with a "tail of death." Have extra batteries available. The ones that came with the kit didn't last that long.

Story wise, it's the usual bad guy trying to destroy everything. Kaos is a funny character. If your child gets bothered by the giant projected head, tell them to wait and see what he really looks like. You play the young portal master who will help by sending in the Skylanders to help the people and stop Kaos. You will have missions to find stuff to rebuild the core of light which will help stop Kaos. Along the way; there are puzzles to solve, legendary treasures, and treasure which you use for training to make your character more powerful.

Now, I must give a warning. The figures are collectable and are purchased separately. This is something to consider if your child has the collector gene. One character named Whirlwind is only available at Target.

You won't be able to avoid all the characters as you will find areas of the game are only for certain types.

There are 32 characters listed on the box. Some come in 3 packs which will save you a little money to watch your single character purchases. There are also 2 adventure packs which open up unlisted areas of the game.

As you can see the costs can add up. But, there is the chance your child will not like all characters. Keep in mind the game has replay ability as the characters have their own specialties and personality which makes them not simply a copy of another.

Overall, this is a well done game for young and old. The characters have personalities and abilities which can make them a favorite. For all Spyros fame, my kid has taken to Whirlwind. I kind of like Trigger happy.

Violence wise, this game is safe as you don't have blood and gore. When an opponent is defeated; they disappear. As mentioned, the characters simply leave the game and report being too tired to continue.

The only bad thing I would say is the collector aspect of the characters. There are many and they are previewed in the game at times so your children will want more when they see them. Then again, if you like to play the game, you may find yourself getting them.....

5Dad's Review - Fun for everyone!, November 23, 2011
We purchased this for our Wii for my son's 10th birthday. It has been a hit with all our kids, ranging from ages 4-10.

Pros:
- Toys are well-made and sturdy
- Great system for switching characters; kids LOVE it
- If your character gets exhausted (killed), you just throw a new character on the platform and continue playing the level from the same spot. No need to start the level over so long as you have a character available that you haven't used yet. Great idea! Each kid picks a character, when one player is knocked out, the next kid puts his character on and starts from where the previous one left off. The more characters you have, the better the chance of beating a level.
- Game is fun and is the perfect difficulty level for kids ages 8-12. Fun for me too though and somewhat challenging.
- My daughter has even enjoyed playing
- Gameplay is simple, not too many buttons to press or complex things to do. Pretty intuitive.
- Mild strategy involved for determining which characters to use in which areas
- Standard melee/magic types of characters; hand-to-hand vs. distance attacks
- Great & unique attacks and powers for each character
- LOTS of characters to get and play with plus some new level expansions are available

Cons:
- Only 2 players can play at a time. Would have loved to have seen 4.
- Have to buy many more characters to access all of the different in-game areas = $$
- Game is relatively short for experienced gamers. Great for kids, but teenagers and adults will beat the game relatively easily.
- Can only advance each character to level 10.
- Not a ton of replay value in the game for gamers...plenty for kids.
- Don't lose a character toy or else you won't be able to play that character any more!
- Short battery life on the platform.
- Makes you want to spend more $$ for more characters and expansions... :)

Overall a lot of fun. $50 on Amazon is great for the Wii starter game. It's $70-80 in stores like Target & Toys R Us. I'm having a great time playing with my kids right now and I actually went and got my own character to play with. The game could be deeper and have better replay value, but the fun we've had with it definitely warrants 5 stars.
